The last time we had a caretaker pope (John XXIII) he initiated a progressive and liberal revolution in the Church in his short reign--Vatican II. With Benedict XVI the pendulum swings all the way to the right. He will be responsible for a conservative revolution. Will he soon gather the bishops of the church for a Vatican "III"?


Perhaps my prophecy from 1997 will be partially fulfilled if Benedict passes away in 2008.

Now that we have a new pope (inching ever closer to the last pope?) it is time to refresh interpretations of Nostradamus' prophecy listed in my previous article The Next Pope.


The prophecy in question is Century 5 Quatrain 49 from the 16th century seer's work "Les Propheties." It reads:


Nul de l'Espaigne mais de l'antique France,
Ne sera esleu pour le tremblant nacelle,
A l'ennemy sera faicte fiance,
Qui dans son regne sera peste cruelle.


Not from Spain but from ancient France,
Will be elected for the trembling ship [the bark of Peter],
He will make a promise to the enemy,
Who will cause great plague during his reign.


The Papal Conclave elected the late--and some would say "great"--John Paul II's grand inquisitor of orthodox Catholic dogma, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, on 19 April 2005 in a fourth ballot landslide. Either the Holy Spirit or shrewd political maneuvering worked to isolate progressive cardinals from picking their aged candidate for a caretaker pope--Cardinal Martini. Instead the pope who would oversee the pause before the next course taken for the Church will be the staunch conservative Prelate of the Congregation of the Doctrine and the Faith. He is the man who for the past 23 years was unaffectionately known by dissenting priests as "Cardinal Panzer" or John Paul's "rottweiler" enforcer of strict doctrine. The message of the Conclave vote is clear. A shaky Holy See, has a new fisherman who with unwavering hand they expect will keep the Catholic fold on a straight and narrow dogmatic course as per the late pontiff's prayers. Metaphorically speaking, this 265th successor to St. Peter, may be a fisher of converts that throws back a majority of the errant catch if they protest too much about his tightening grip on the net. More on that later.


How does a German cardinal come "from Ancient France"?


With more prescient persuasion than one might think. It all depends on whether Nostradamus intended us to take the cryptic statement in line 1 of the prophecy above as minimally specific or broad. For decades I advanced one interpretation that line 1 targeted John Paul II, who was born in Southwest Poland, which happened to be part of the frontiers of French King Charlemagne's sprawling and ancient Frankish empire. In my previous article I introduced a new and minimalist variant, posing that the quatrain could be about John Paul's successor. He might be a cardinal coming from the most smallest political boundary generally accepted as the first and most ancient "French" kingdom: the region surrounding Paris. Thus Nostradamus' habit of juxtaposing ancient places for the advent of modern people has the cardinal's priestly "habit" be that of an Archbishop of Paris, like Cardinal Lustiger--long shot though I believed he would be.


As it turned out, Lustiger was not more than a ballot pusher in the Conclave. And, as I said over seven years earlier in my book The Last Pope, Cardinal Martini did turn out to be the best chance for the progressives to take St. Peter's chair from another conservative candidate. Martini was the only liberal to make a real run against Cardinal Ratzinger at grabbing one of the holiest of brass rings in Christendom--St. Peter's ring. Nevertheless it went to a Teutonic cardinal born 78 years before in Marktl Am Inn, near Traunstein, Germany.


Looking at this development in hindsight, you cannot get more "Ancient France" than that. Here's why. As many of you have reminded me, the new pope's birthplace is in the heart of what once was Charlemagne's ancient Frankish Empire. The Franks are a Germanic tribe. Their homeland ran along the west bank of the Rhine River, which is just a short distance west from Ratzinger's birthplace in eastern Bavaria. Even before Charlemagne's stretched his empire to the frontiers of southwestern Poland, Bavaria was a Frankish kingdom ruled by Frankish kings in Paris from as early as the mid 6th century, starting with Clotaire I. Later, Ratzinger's homeland became again a part of a unified "ancient" French Empire under the heir of Clotaire II, Dagobert I, in the year 629. For two more centuries Bavaria slipped in and out of French domination until Charlemagne in 787 incorporated Ratzinger's homeland into his Carlolingian Empire for a longer time.

...comes a pope, cassocked and capped in one of Nostradamus' ways to miter his point across time to us, with a classical reference to geography.


Line 2 says this pope...


...Will be elected for the trembling ship [the bark of Peter]...


Here we have the double entendre describing the previous pope's enfeeblement from Parkinson's disease, plus an allusion to the enfeebled Church Ratzinger inherits. The new pope must shore up a shaking Church suffering pederast sexual scandals, a decimation by old age of the priesthood and a wholesale abandonment of European and American Catholics. Some might add that the exodus is a direct result of a rigid dogma defended and policed by John Paul's theological "rottweiler" and successor for over two decades. Ratzinger as the new Benedict XVI also inherits a priestly hierarchy that lost collegial freedom under the autocratic Polish "Papa." Many Cardinals believe--whether they lean to the left or right of late pope's interpretation of theology--that John Paul's dictatorial reign was a detriment to the church and had planted seeds for a future crisis.


What then might Nostradamus hint Pope Benedict will do? Line 3 says:


...He will make a promise to the enemy...


If we regard recent developments against the record of the man who is now the new pope, the "enemy" is not outside of the Church but within. The enemy is what Raztinger, the once and perhaps future inquisitor of the faith, decried as the "dictatorship of relativism." In layman's--or the laity's--terms, that means those Catholic priests or lay followers who pick and choose those parts of Catholic teaching and dogma that satisfy their temperament. The enemy of this new pope, is a progressive or liberal interpretation of Vatican II reforms. Thus the "promise" made to such an enemy could be the one Ratzinger delivered while fresh in his new white cassock and cap of Benedict XVI. He promised to be a more collegial and tolerant pope than his predecessor. If this interpretation is correct, I would expect Pope Benedict will be as much a uniter of his flock, as the American President, G. W. Bush was a uniter for his. Look for Benedict to divide his church between "blue" and "red" (progressive and conservative) Catholics, especially in North America and Europe during his relatively short reign.


The last line of the prophecy says that this pope makes a promise to an enemy...


...Who will cause great plague during his reign.


If we take this line into the light of the present new pontificacy, the great plague could be a schism in the Church. Moreover, it could stand for some promise made for ecumenism by Benedict XVI towards the Islamic world that falters when the war on terror widens. The pestilence might even include a man-made "plague" coming from weapons of mass destruction, either unleashed by the US or by her enemies in the war on terror. Indeed Nostradamus often returns to the theme of Rome's destruction by such weapons, as do other famous Catholic seers of the past millennium.


Then again, the "plague" may be a coming pandemic in Ratiznger's rule as pope. He is one of the oldest pontiffs to ever ascend St. Peter's throne. Even if his pontificacy was short, there are disturbing indications that the next pandemic may be with us within a year. The CDC (The Center for Disease and Control) caution that a spread of Chinese bird flu is imminent. Could this be the "great plague during his reign"?


The syntax leans more to a plague of commission by the hands of an enemy against the Church rather than a mishandling of sick chickens. Still, the view of our world from so many centuries back might be vague enough for a seer from the 1550s to mix and misread the signs.


DE GLORIA OLIVAE

Joseph Ratzinger bears the 111th and final Latin prophetic motto attributed to St. Malachy's famous medieval prophecy purportedly written in 1140.

Today I will provide a brief summary of how the new Benedict XVI fits Malachy's motto for second-to-last pope before the onset of Judgment Day. Now let us return to the meaning of "Gloria Olivae" for the new pope.


The "olive" branch in Medieval prophecy stands for peace. For a long time, Malachy prophecy watchers assumed that the next pope bearing this name would be a great peacemaker. Certainly Cardinal Ratzinger took on the mantle of as much, when in his first public declaration as "Benedict XVI" he explained his new name with the motto "Peace and Consolation."


The last pope by that name, Benedict XV, ruled during World War I. He tried but failed as a peacemaker, setting forth his Seven Points to forestall any future world wars. Neither the victorious allied leaders nor the vanquished invited Benedict XVI to attend the negotiation and ratification of the Treaty of Versailles. His public neutrality during the war had soured warring Christian European leaders on both sides. Only US President Woodrow Wilson took the pope's peace plans seriously. He adopted some of the pope's ideas as the basis for his Fourteen Point Plan submitted at the Versailles peace negotiations.


Ratzinger as the next Benedict hints a message here. He intends to succeed where the previous Benedict failed. This new Benedict was elected during a new world war of international terrorism. He may try to be the peacemaker that prevents its escalation into a clash of Christian and Islamic cultures. If he is unsuccessful then Nostradamus' prediction elsewhere in his prophecies of a 27-year war may come to fruition and his Third Antichrist, code named "MABUS," will trigger that third world war.


Deeper still in the layers of meaning in the name "Benedict" is the signal identifying the new pope with the first and earliest founder of a Christian monastic order, St. Benedict (c.480-550). This great reformer's codes of law had a significant impact on the Western World. St. Benedict was known as the great peacemaker and reconciler, saving Western culture and Western Christianity from falling into the chaos of the Dark Ages. Perhaps Pope Benedict XVI sees himself, like his predecessor, on the brink of a new darkness, requiring a reaffirmation of dogma and codes of Catholic behavior.


Pope Benedict's name has evokes interesting possibilities out of St. Malachy's motto: De Gloria "Olivae." The Olivetans are a reform branch of the white monks of the Benedictine Order, established in the 14th century. The olive branch is their symbol--the Sermon on the Mount of Olives from the New Testament, their creed. The Olivetans believe they are set to prepare the world for the apocalypse foretold in Christ's Mount of Olives sermon.


Is that what Benedict XVI also intends to prepare us for?


St. Benedict was made the patron saint of Europe by Paul VI--Cardinal Ratzinger's mentor. This implies that Ratzinger/Benedict XVI will either attempt to bring European Catholics back in the fold, or he will make good on a reverie recorded in his voluminous writings that a smaller church population adhering to ALL the dogma is better for the Church's survival in dark times than including a larger Catholic fold that only picks and chooses bits of the dogma to satisfy its modernist attitudes. It must be remembered that the previous Pope Benedict was a staunch anti-liberal and anti-modernist. Is the new Benedict the same?


In my last bulletin, logged a week before the Conclave convened to pick a new pope, I predicted that if the cardinals intended to choose a caretaker pope it would be Cardinal Ratzinger.


Destiny has set forth upon that prophetic time line today urged forward by echoes of the past. The Vatican, like the USA, seems to be stuck in a 40 year loop of repeating history--a phenomenon I have defined previously as a Karmic Echo. It consists of history lessons unlearned by nations or religions, returning every 20 to 40 years for a new encounter. America today is facing lessons unlearned as a nation with the return of a second military quagmire launched by a Texan president. Last time it was the liberal Texan, Johnson, 40 years ago in Vietnam. This time around it is a conservative Texan, Bush, today in Iraq.


The Vatican is a small but influential nation of priests and nuns guiding the faith of one sixth of the earth's population. It may also see the return of a short lived, caretaker pope launching a revolution to rival what took place roughly 40 years earlier. The brief pontificacy of liberal John XXIII launched Vatican II-- a progressive revolution that tried to bring the Catholic Church into the 20th century. If we are indeed seeing a Karmic Echo, I believe the conservative Benedict XVI will also be short lived. He will launch his own reform of the Church in a conservative revolution that could keep the Catholic religion from entering the 21st century.

Rapping priest, Catholic pilgrims party in Sydney

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A rapping priest from New York's Bronx entertained thousands of young pilgrims at Bondi Beach on Wednesday, while acid jazz and Gregorian Chant filled Sydney's Opera House on day two of the Catholic Church's "Woodstock."
More than 200,000 young Catholics in Sydney for World Youth Day, July 15-20, held 250 pray ceremonies in parks and streets around the city and attended music concerts, as they eagerly awaited the first appearance of Pope Benedict on Thursday.
The Pope, who has been resting since arriving in Sydney on Sunday, held morning mass in his retreat and was then introduced to an array of Australian animals.
After a brief description of each animal and its habitat the pontiff patted the animals: a baby kangaroo called a joey, a koala, an echidna, a carpet python, a blue tongue lizard, a frill-neck lizard and a tiny crocodile.
World Youth Day was the brainchild of the late Pope John Paul II who thought a festival which included not only masses and religious events like the stations of the cross, but also music and dance concerts would revitalise the world's Catholic youth.
After 150,000 pilgrims attended WYD's opening mass and late night rock concert on the shores of Sydney Harbour on Tuesday, thousands spread out across Sydney on Wednesday to not only to pray but to continue partying.
"I went to bed late last night and didn't eat enough breakfast," said Australian pilgrim Sam Merryfull, 17, as he rested on a wooden bench. A nun gave him fruit and water.
"The opening mass was great, so many cultures coming together," Merryfull told local media.
More than 165 outdoor concerts will be staged, from religious music to heavy metal, acid jazz and rap.
Some 3,000 pilgrims gathered at Bondi Beach on Wednesday for the "Come to the Water" concert organised by the Franciscans, with the headline act rapping priest Father Stan Fortuna.
On Wednesday night, Italian Christian heavy metal band Metatrone were scheduled to perform in a city park.
But unlike Woodstock on Max Yasgur's farm outside New York in 1969, pilgrims will not go hungry or sleep out in the rain.
Thousands of young Catholics, nuns and priests on Wednesday attended "Aussie BBQs" in schools, churches and homes.
Organisers have prepared 3.5 million meals, 2 million bread rolls, 2.7 million cakes, 1.3 million pieces of fruit and 2.5 million cans of mineral water for pilgrims.
With several masses to attend, 300 kg of flour has been used to make one million Hosts, the wafer consecrated in the celebration of the Eucharist.
Pilgrims will stage an all-night vigil on Saturday at the city's main horse racing track ahead of the final mass by Pope Benedict on Sunday, but for most of WYD they will have a roof over their heads in case Sydney's winter turns nasty.
Around 100,000 are sleeping in 400 churches and school halls, 40,000 in family homes, 10,000 in Sydney's Olympic Park and the rest in paid accommodation.
On Thursday, Pope Benedict will meet Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd before travelling by boat across Sydney Harbour to greet young pilgrims and then travel in his Popemobile through the city's central business district.
Police have launched an Olympic-style security operation for the papal visit, with 300 streets closed and more than 350 "declared zones" where cars and people can be searched.
Sydney's main business thoroughfare, George Street, will be closed to traffic all week, allowing thousands of hymn-singing pilgrims to wander through the city freely.
"The only car we want to see in the city tomorrow is a Popemobile," WYD spokeswoman Kristina Keneally told a news conference. "So if your car is not a Popemobile leave it at home, the Pope wants to see you, not your car."

SYDNEY (Reuters) - About 150,000 young pilgrims attended mass on the shores of Sydney Harbor on Tuesday for the Catholic church's biggest youth festival, but protesters plan to rally against Pope Benedict ahead of his outdoor mass on Sunday.
"Too often in the history of the world when young people travel in great numbers to other parts of the world they do so in the cause of war, but you are here as pilgrims of peace," Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Tuesday.
"Some say there is no place for faith in the 21st century, I say they are wrong. You are the light of the world at a time when the world has so much darkness," said Rudd, a practicing Catholic, in welcoming the pilgrims ahead of the mass.
More than 250,000 young Catholics from 176 countries have arrived in Sydney for World Youth Day (WYD), July 15-20, holding not only crucifixes, rosaries and bibles, but national flags draped over their shoulders and guitars.
The Catholic church hopes WYD will revitalize the world's young Catholics at a time when the cult of the individual and consumerism has become big distractions in their daily lives.
"Young friend, God and his people expect much from u because u have within you the Fathers supreme gift: the Spirit of Jesus - BXVI," read the first of the Pope's daily text messages which will be sent out during World Youth Day.
The Pope has said he will apologize during his visit to Australian victims of sexual abuse in the church. Broken Rites, which represents abuse victims, has a list of 107 convictions for church abuse, but says there may be thousands more victims.
SYDNEY TRANSFORMED
Sydney has sometimes been called Australia's Sin City; it has the world's biggest gay and lesbian mardi gras and the country's most notorious redlight district, Kings Cross. But this week Sydney has been swept by a wave of goodness and Christianity.
George Street in the city centre is normally a noisy, congested and stressed-out thoroughfare at lunchtime, but on Tuesday the strip was calm, filled with the sound of hymns and the strumming of guitars and rattling of tambourines.
Thousands of pilgrims walked down George Street, one of 300 streets closed in an Olympic-style security operation. Like fans from rival football teams, each time different national groups met they tried to out sing each other.
"We're singing about how we feel in our heart. We have met a lot of people and have been talking about what Jesus Christ has meant to our lives," said Brazilian pilgrim Rudimar Gouveia.

"Don't spend your life sitting on the fence...because only commitments bring fulfillment," Australian Cardinal George Pell told the pilgrims during the opening WYD mass. "To be a disciple of Jesus requires discipline, especially self discipline."
"No Pope" protesters have welcomed young Catholics in Sydney, but plan to hand them coathangers to protest against backyard abortions, condoms to promote safe sex, and stickers with gay themes to promote the rights of homosexuals.
Anti-protest laws imposed for the Pope's Sydney visit this week, which could see protesters arrested for annoying Catholic pilgrims, were ruled unconstitutional by a court on Tuesday.
Under the laws, protesters could have been arrested or fined A$5,500 (US$5,340) for wearing anti-Catholic T-shirts or for handing out condoms.

SYDNEY, Australia - Pope Benedict petted a koala and met other Australian native animals Wednesday during a low-key second day of a Catholic youth festival that has brought thousands of pilgrims to Sydney.
The Pope, enjoying a final day of rest before joining the events on Thursday, held prayers at a private retreat Wednesday, then viewed some native Australian animals brought to him by wildlife officers, including a wallaby, a baby crocodile and a spiky echidna. He petted a koala, scratching it briefly behind the ear and smiling.
The World Youth Day celebration offered a relaxed schedule on Wednesday, beginning with "time for silence for reflection," according to the pilgrims' official handbook. The faithful attended barbecues at hundreds of venues around the city, browsed through souvenir shops and participated in a pilgrimage walk to St. Mary's Cathedral downtown. In the evening, a beach party at Sydney's famous Bondi Beach was to feature a rapping American priest.
Pilgrims also received the second of daily mobile phone text messages from Benedict: "The Holy Spirit gave the Apostles and gives u the power boldly 2 proclaim that Christ is risen! - BXVI."
Australian fauna was also on the minds of some of the crowds of pilgrims who celebrated together at traditional Aussie fry-ups in the city.
"Is it kangaroo? Because I can't do that," said Carol Stockley from New Jersey as she overlooked meat sizzling on a hot plate at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in the city. "But we'll try the sausages."
At Notre Dame University, hundreds of pilgrims relaxed in a courtyard, posed for pictures with a life-sized cutout of the Pope and munched on Tim Tams (Australian cookies) and lamingtons, local favourite coconut sponge cakes.
Sister Mariam Caritas of New York City chewed on a sausage and giggled with fellow nuns as she enjoyed her first Australian barbecue.
"I've never had so much fun in my life!" she declared.
Nearly 250,000 people registered for World Youth Day, more than half from overseas. The scale of the event was revealed when pilgrims arrived in droves and gathered along a waterfront Tuesday near the landmark Sydney Harbor Bridge for a twilight Mass, beginning with a procession of groups from 168 countries waving their national flags.
Their joy has not been matched by everyone. Sydney residents and commuters have had to deal with street closures and bus route detours while the pilgrims have filled the city for days, recognizable by their official yellow, red and orange backpacks and their cheerful greetings and outbursts of song.
As one group of faithful walked down the street belting out a cheerful rendition of "You Are My Sunshine" Wednesday, irritated drivers trying to navigate the city's largely blocked-off downtown roads leaned on their horns. One pilgrim steadily blowing on a whistle to lead his group along a sidewalk drew a sour look and grumble from a woman walking past.
Benedict has been resting at a retreat on Sydney's outskirts. He is to move to the grounds of St. Mary's Cathedral, an imposing gothic-style church that is one of Australia's oldest and largest, later Wednesday, marking the end of his semi-vacation.
On Thursday, he will receive a traditional aboriginal welcome and tour Sydney's harbour by boat before delivering a major address to pilgrims. A papal mass on Sunday before thousands at a racetrack in the city is scheduled to end the proceedings.

Pope issues tough warning over pop culture, environment

SYDNEY (AFP) - Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday warned Catholics of the perils of pop culture and pillaging the earth's resources after a rapturous welcome at the world's biggest Christian festival in Australia.

Speaking against the spectacular backdrop of Sydney's famous harbour, the pontiff told hundreds of thousands of pilgrims in Australia's biggest and trendiest city that "something is amiss" in modern society.

"Our world has grown weary of greed, exploitation and division, of the tedium of false idols and piecemeal responses, and the pain of false promises," the pope said after a welcoming ceremony by Aborigines in tribal paint.

Benedict told a vast sea of youths from around the world, gathered under a forest of national flags for World Youth Day, that humanity was squandering the earth's resources to satisfy its insatiable appetite for material goods.

In one of his strongest-ever messages on the environment , the pope spoke poetically of his 20-hour flight from Rome to Australia, saying the wondrous views from his plane evoked a profound sense of awe.

But the 81-year-old pontiff told his young audience that the planet's problems were also easier to perceive from the sky.

"Perhaps reluctantly, we come to acknowledge that there are scars which mark the surface of our earth -- erosion, deforestation, the squandering of the world's mineral and ocean resources in order to fuel an insatiable consumption," he said.

Earlier, shouts of "Viva, Papa" rang out over the harbour as a "boat-a-cade" of 13 vessels led by a water-spouting fire tug and flanked by bodyguards on jet skis glided past Sydney's iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge en route to the pope's World Youth Day debut.

Benedict arrived in Sydney last Sunday, but took a four-day holiday before beginning his formal duties, which end with a papal mass expected to draw 500,000 people on Sunday.

Ahead of his public appearance, he was welcomed by Governor-General Michael Jeffery, the representative of Australia's head of state, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

In a brief speech at the ceremony at Sydney's Government House, the pontiff hailed Rudd's apology to Aborigines for past injustices in an historic address to parliament in February.

"Thanks to the Australian government's courageous decision to acknowledge the injustices committed against the indigenous peoples in the past, concrete steps are now being taken to achieve reconciliation based on mutual respect," Benedict said.

"This example of reconciliation offers hope to peoples all over the world who long to see their rights affirmed and their contribution to society acknowledged and promoted."

But there was some confusion over whether the pope would deliver an apology of his own -- to Australian victims of sex abuse by Catholic clergymen, as the scandal cast a shadow over the festival.

Benedict indicated to journalists on his plane on the way to Australia that he would apologise but a Vatican official late Wednesday raised doubts over the issue.

The angry parents of two Australian girls sexually abused by a Catholic priest urged Benedict not to back away from his apparent pledge to apologise.

"I can't really understand why they're backpedalling on that," said Anthony Foster, as he and his wife Christine flew into Sydney after cutting short a holiday in London.

The Fosters' daughter Emma committed suicide this year aged 26, after struggling to deal with abuse by a priest while she was at primary school.

Her sister Katie was also abused and turned to alcohol in her teens before being involved in a motor accident which left her brain-damaged.

Rudd, a committed Christian who attends Anglican services, told the pope that he was welcomed by Australians of all faiths "as an apostle of peace."

The pope later toured the city in his bullet-proof "popemobile" through thousands of cheering, flag-brandishing pilgrims and bemused locals heading home from work.

World Youth Day, a celebration of the Catholic faith aimed at rejuvenating the church, has been held in a different host city around the world every two or three years since 1986.

SYDNEY (AFP) - The scandal over child sex abuse by Catholic priests flared again Wednesday as Pope Benedict XVI prepared to take centre stage at the world's biggest Christian festival in Sydney.
While more than 200,000 young pilgrims attended beach concerts, barbecues and religious classes, the pope and the head of the Australian church, Cardinal George Pell, faced the parents of two victims of abuse.
The pilgrims are in Sydney for World Youth Day celebrations, which will be led by the pope from Thursday at the end of his four-day holiday at a retreat on Sydney's outskirts.
But the scandal over sex abuse by clergymen has partly overshadowed the festival, despite the pope's pledge on Sunday to apologise to victims as he did in the United States in April.
And in a move that could further complicate the papal visit, the pontiff's spokesman, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, cast doubt on the form of the pope's planned statement, expected on Saturday.
"I draw your attention to the term 'apology' that journalists are using," Lombardi, director of the Vatican press office, told a press conference late Wednesday.
"The pope in the plane (to Australia) spoke of the problems of sexual abuse but I don't think he said he would apologise and I advise you to listen to what the pope says" when he raises the issue, he said, without elaborating.
The pontiff was however clear when he told journalists he would examine how the church can "prevent, heal and reconcile" the past crimes of the clergy.
"This is the essential content of what we will say as we apologise," the pope had said.
The father of two girls abused by a Melbourne priest, one of whom committed suicide, meanwhile said he and his wife were on their way back to Australia from Europe to confront the church over its attitude to paedophilia.
Anthony Foster told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. he would not accept an apology unless the pontiff also changed the way the church and its lawyers dealt with victims of sex abuse.
"I want them to set up a system which provides lifetime help to victims, a system where they beg forgiveness of the victims," he said.
Foster said he planned to make a public statement when he arrived and would demand a response from the pope and Pell.
He said he hoped the pope would grant him an audience to hear his demands, but added: "I should not have to try to see them. They should be coming to us to beg our forgiveness."
Foster's daughter Emma committed suicide this year aged 26, after struggling to deal with having been repeatedly abused by a senior Catholic priest while she was at primary school, ABC said.
Her sister Katie was also abused and turned to alcohol in her teens before being left brain-damaged after being hit by a car while drunk, the broadcaster reported.
The priest involved, Father Kevin O'Donnell, died in 1997 after serving time in jail for multiple sex offences, but the Fosters had to fight an eight-year legal battle for compensation from the church, ABC said.
World Youth Day coordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher angered the parents by telling reporters that most people were focusing on the positive aspects of the event "rather than dwelling crankily as a few people are doing on old wounds".
The Fosters told Australian news website ninemsn.com from Tokyo's Narita airport that they were deeply hurt by the bishop's "very insensitive" comments.
The remarks showed "a complete lack of understanding of the victims, that there are so many people out there that really do have open wounds", said the girls' father.
Pell described the story of Emma Foster as "tragic", saying he had apologised to her and her family in 1998.
"I met with her parents. We offered them some financial help. We also offered them counselling," he told reporters.
The pope, who Lombardi said was likely to address the issue of sexual abuse Saturday while meeting with bishops and Australian novices, left his semi-rural retreat for St Mary's Cathedral House in central Sydney late Wednesday.
The 81-year-old pontiff, who has been recovering from jet-lag after the 20-hour flight from Rome, will make his formal arrival in Sydney in a 14-vessel "boat-a-cade" on the harbour on Thursday.
He is expected to be welcomed by crowds on spectator craft and harbourside vantage points before disembarking and addressing a gathering of some 150,000 pilgrims.
He will then take to his more traditional "Popemobile" for a tour of the city streets, which are expected to be lined with up to 500,000 people, organisers say.

Pope Benedict "rock star" of World Youth Day in Sydney

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict arrives in Sydney on Sunday as the headline "rock star" act in the Catholic Church's World Youth Day -- its version of Woodstock, five days of peace, love and Christianity.


Already thousands of young Catholics, nuns and priests from around the world have converged on Sydney, which is treating the July 15-20 event as bigger than the Sydney 2000 Olympics.


"We are looking forward to see what God has in mind for us," said American Wayne Bolduc, as groups of pilgrims, some wearing backpacks with pictures of Jesus, explored Sydney on Thursday.


Organizers are expecting 500,000 pilgrims, but only half that have actually registered so far.


Police have been given extra anti-protest powers so they can arrest anyone annoying pilgrims, some 300 roads have been closed and workers have been told to take holidays or avoid the city.


Elective surgery in some hospitals has been cancelled and extra doctors rostered on in preparation for injuries. Signs warn motorists that overseas pilgrims are not used to cars on the left-hand side of the road and may step in front of traffic.


The city's main horse-racing track, site of the closing gig where hundreds of thousands will gather for a papal mass, has been shut to racing for 10 weeks in preparation.


Organizers and local government authorities say World Youth Day will be a religious and financial windfall, with the event estimated to earn the city up to A$200 million (US$190 million).


But not everyone is happy. The group "No Pope" is planning to hand out condoms in protest at church's doctrine and protest the extra police powers they say crush civil liberties.


Victims of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy plan to protest and call on the Pope to make apologies. There have been 107 convictions for sexual abuse in the Catholic church in Australia.


"I can't confirm or deny that he will talk about it (sexual abuse) but it would not surprise me," Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said in a papal briefing in Rome on Wednesday.


CATHOLIC WOODSTOCK


World Youth Day was the brainchild of the late Pope John Paul II who thought a festival which included not only masses and religious events like the stations of the cross, but also music and dance concerts would revitalize the world's Catholic youth.


More than 165 outdoor concerts are planned, from religious music to heavy metal, acid jazz, and rap, say organizers who tag the Pope the "rock star" attraction of World Youth Day.


There will even be an underground mass and the remains of a dead Italian saint have been flown out for pilgrims to inspect.

For the first three days of his visit the Pope, like most rock stars, will resting before his gigs. The Vatican's Lombardi said the Pope will retreat to "recover his vital rhythms."


Inside the Catholic retreat on the outskirts of Sydney, the Pope will rest, pray and play a little piano, said an official from Opus Dei which runs the centre.

"He'll probably play the piano more than do sport. I think it's very much a time of rest and preparation," said Opus Dei communications director Richard Vella.

The Pope's first gig on Thursday July 17 will see him meet the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and travel by boat across Sydney Harbour to greet thousands of young pilgrims, before heading off in the Popemobile through Sydney's CBD.

The church believes that despite Pope Benedict, 81, being the oldest pope elected, he can still engage with young people.

"The goals of World Youth Day are to strengthen the faith and goodness of the young people that are coming," said the head of the Catholic church in Australia, Cardinal George Pell.

"How the Pope will do that is by his presence and teachings, by his praying with us. He is a very fine teacher," said Pell.

Mainstream churches like the Catholic and Anglican struggle to attract worshippers in Australia, unlike small evangelical churches and Buddhism, the fastest growth faith in Australia.

Some 5 million Australians describe themselves as Catholic, but less than one million attend Sunday mass, and the number may have dropped to about 100,000 in the past 5 years.

Anti-Pope fashion parade held ahead of Australian visit

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australians protesting against Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Sydney took a creative turn on Wednesday, staging an "annoying" fashion show of T-shirts displaying anti-Catholic slogans.


The show, a response to new laws against causing "annoyance" to pilgrims attending Catholic World Youth day next week, came just a day after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd called on all Australians to show the Pope respect.


"They are not from Milan," acknowledged Rachel Evans, spokeswoman of the NoToPope group, as T-shirts featuring slogans such as "The Pope is wrong, put a condom on" were displayed outside the New South Wales state parliament.


Other shirts, which are selling for 20 dollars (19 US), read "Pope go homo", "There is no God" and "Does the history of your church annoy you?"


Among the most graphic was one featuring Benedict XVI standing with arms outstretched but with pointed, red devil ears and a tail superimposed on the image under the slogan "Chief homophobe".


NoToPope, a coalition including Christians, atheists and gay groups, was protesting at new regulations giving police power to stop conduct that "causes annoyance or inconvenience to participants" in World Youth Day.


Failure to comply with the laws can attract a penalty of up to 5,500 dollars, prompting one designer last week to come up with a T-shirt reading "$5,500, a small price to pay for annoying Catholics."


Evans slammed the laws, which will be in force for the duration of the July 15-20 World Youth Day and may threaten a NoToPope rally planned for July 19, during which members plan to hand out condoms to pilgrims.


"This again is an attempt to intimidate people to not come to our rally and say their piece against the Pope," she told reporters.

World Youth Day is a global celebration of the Catholic faith aimed at young people and is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of local and foreign pilgrims.

Australian Catholic leader in sex abuse row before Pope's visit

SYDNEY (AFP) - The leader of the Catholic church in Australia Tuesday denied trying to cover up allegations of sex abuse against a priest, just days before Pope Benedict XVI is due to visit for World Youth Day.

Sydney Archbishop Cardinal George Pell acknowledged the latest scandal was an embarrassment ahead of the Pope's trip, during which the pontiff is expected to apologise to victims of predatory priests.

But Pell defended his actions over sex abuse allegations against Father Terence Goodall, which he said had been investigated by the church and police and had resulted in the priest being stood down.

"There was no attempt at a cover-up," he said. "Both sets of allegations against Father Goodall were carried to their conclusions."

The cardinal admitted, however, that a letter he wrote to Anthony Jones, who had accused Goodall of sexual abuse after a swimming session some 20 years earlier, was "badly worded and a mistake."

In the 2003 letter, obtained by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Pell told Jones an internal report did not support his accusation of attempted aggravated sexual assault.

But the internal report, compiled by layman Howard Murray, had in fact accepted all Jones' allegations.

Pell also told Jones there were no other complaints against Goodall.

But in another letter obtained by the ABC and dated the same day, Pell told a second man he accepted his claim that he had been indecently assaulted by Goodall as an altar boy when he was 10 or 11.

"My letter to Mr. Jones was badly worded and a mistake," Pell said.

"I was attempting to inform him that there was no other allegation of rape and I overstated my agreement with Murray, who found all allegations sustained."

Pell said he would not step aside, adding that he hoped the case would not be an issue by the time the Pope arrives in Sydney on Sunday ahead of a global celebration of Catholic youth.

Pell, who pioneered protocols to deal with sexual abuse by the clergy in Australia, agreed that the timing of the case was embarrassing.

"Yes, it is of course," he said.

The issue of sex abuse by priests has dogged the Catholic Church for years and led to Pope Benedict XVI making a historic apology for the actions of child-abusing clergy during a visit to the United States in April.

The Pope is under pressure to apologise for similar actions within the Australian branch of the church during his July 13-21 visit to Sydney.

But Anthony Jones, now 54 and living on a disability pension, said a papal apology would be meaningless.

"What's the point of an apology when the senior ranking titled cleric in the Catholic church of Australia is still covering up sex abuse," he said.
"I believe Cardinal Pell should resign."

Broken Rites, a support group for victims of church-related sexual abuse, says that 107 Catholic priests and religious brothers have been sentenced in Australian courts on sex charges.

But it believes many more cases have gone unreported or have never made it to court because the victims have taken their complaints to the church instead of the police.

Note that John Paul II as Fr. Karol Woytila was rejected by the Gregorian University because he didn't "qualify' and this rejection made him hate the Jesuits to the marrow of his bone in addition to the hatred that St. Josemaria Escriva already inculcated in him





St. Ignatius wrote in the constitution of the Jesuits that a Jesuit must not seek or agree to be a cardinal or bishop - because St. Ignatius saw in live action at the Vatican the corruption of the Popes and Cardinals and Bishops and he knew what Dante saw in Paradise Lost that "the roads of Hell are paved with the skull of Bishops, Cardinals and Popes".

Pope names new head of saint-making office, picks Jesuit for doctrinal post

VATICAN CITY - The Catholic Church's saint-making office has a new chief and is handling fast-track efforts that could lead to the canonization of Pope John Paul II.


The Vatican says Pope Benedict has appointed 70-year-old Msgr. Angelo Amato, the No. 2 in the Holy See's office safeguarding doctrinal orthodoxy, as prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.


The current head, 76-year-old Jose Cardinal Saraiva Martins, has retired.


Meanwhile, Benedict has named a Spanish Jesuit theologian, Rev. Luis Ladaria, to replace Amato at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican watchdog body for doctrinal orthodoxy. Ladaria, 64, is a professor of doctrinal theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.


John Paul died in 2005 after a nearly 27-year pontificate.


Shortly afterward, Benedict put the Polish pope on the fast track for possible sainthood by waiving the customary five-year waiting period before work can begin to determine a candidate's suitability
