A ruling on Thursday from a federal judge in Oregon marks the first time that an American court has ever issued an order requiring the Vatican to hand over documents in a sex abuse case.

Whether that actually happens, however, depends on how the Vatican responds, including whether it tries to persuade either the Oregon judge or an appeals court that it shouldn’t have to comply.

U.S. District Judge Michael Mosman on Thursday granted a limited number of requests for discovery put forward by attorney Jeffrey Anderson, representing a man who says he was abused by Andrew Ronan, a former Servite priest who was laicized in 1966 and who died in 1992.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, the main advocacy group in the United States for victims of clerical abuse, hailed the order as a “historic achievement.”

Pope Talks of Suffering During Good Friday TV Show

Pope Benedict XVI consoled a 7-year-old Japanese girl, reassured a mother about her ailing son's soul and advised a Muslim woman that dialogue was the way to peace in Ivory Coast.

In a push to engage the world online, the pontiff fielded their questions during an unusual Good Friday appearance on Italian TV. It was hardly a casual or spontaneous chat: Seven questions were selected from thousands that poured in via RAI television's website, and Benedict recorded his answers last week.

He seemed a bit stiff, sitting all alone in a big white chair behind his desk inside the Apostolic Palace as an unseen interviewer read out the letters to him.

But the teacher and pastor in the 84-year-old Benedict came through as he fielded the questions, which all dealt with suffering and Jesus' death, which Christians recall on Good Friday, and his resurrection, celebrated on Easter Sunday.

The first question came from young Elena, who asked the pope why she felt so afraid after Japan's earthquake shook her house and killed so many children.

"Why do children have to be so sad?" the girl asked. "I'm asking the pope, who speaks with God, to explain it to me."

Speaking simply as if Elena were right there, Benedict responded that he too wondered why so many innocent people suffer, but that she should take heart in knowing that Jesus had suffered too.


"You can be sure that in the world, in the universe, there are many people who are with you, thinking of you, doing what they can for you to help you," Benedict said.

"Be assured, we are with you, with all the Japanese children who are suffering."

He then turned to a question from an Italian mother, Maria Teresa, who worried about her son, Francesco, who has been in a vegetative state since Easter 2009. She asked if Francesco's soul still remained.

"He feels the presence of love," Benedict told her, praising her for keeping her vigil as a "true act of love."

"I encourage you, therefore, to carry on, to know that you are giving a great service to humanity with this sign of faith, with this sign of respect for life, with this love for a wounded body and a suffering soul," he said.

Monsignor Paul Tighe, the No. 2 in the Vatican's social communications office, said the decision to have the pope participate in the televised event stemmed from the realization that Benedict must engage more with the public to ensure his message is received.

"This is a very simple beginning of what you could call interactivity," Tighe said in a recent interview. "It's launching something new for us."

In the past, Benedict has taken preselected questions from carefully chosen Catholics, responding live in St. Peter's Square, such as when he meets annually with university students. He also regularly answers questions submitted beforehand by journalists when flying to foreign countries and has fielded questions from groups of priests.

But the Good Friday session was the first time he had taken questions from the general public — and not necessarily even the Catholic public.

"The advantage of this is it opens up the possibility to people who couldn't hope or aspire to having a direct meeting with the pope, but through the Internet can put their questions there," Tighe said.

That was certainly the case for Bintu, a Muslim woman who greeted the pope in Arabic and asked him in French for his advice on bringing peace to Ivory Coast, which has been wracked by political violence.

"How many innocents have lost their lives!" she said. "How many mothers and how many children traumatized!"

Benedict told her he was grieved that he could do so little, saying he had tasked the head of the Vatican's justice and peace office, Cardinal Peter Kodwo Turkson, to try to mediate between the country's opposing factions.

"The only path is to renounce violence, to begin anew with dialogue, with the attempt to find peace together, with a new concern for one another, a new willingness to be open to one another," the pontiff said.

The broadcast spliced the pope's responses with commentary from Italian religious affairs experts, as well as video footage of the people asking their questions.

It was a very feminine-focused event, with three of the questions coming from women and a fourth about Mary.

Benedict continued that theme with the more traditional Good Friday event — the nighttime Way of the Cross procession at Rome's Colosseum, in which the faithful re-enact the final hours of Christ's life. The meditations for each station of the cross were composed by an Italian nun, Sister Maria Rita Piccione, and the artwork accompanying them were designed by another nun.

Piccione said she didn't know why she had been selected. The only communication she ever had with the pope, she said in a newspaper interview, was when she sent him a letter last year offering her support for the "persecution" he and the church were going through in the midst of the clerical abuse scandal.

Benedict didn't refer directly to the scandal but spoke generally about sin and how Good Friday recalls that Christ died for all humankind's sins. He looked tired after the nearly two-hour procession, the bulk of which he spent kneeling in prayer. But he seemed to hold up well as he headed back to the Vatican, where he will preside over an Easter Vigil late Saturday and Sunday's Easter Mass.

While the Q&A session departed from the Vatican's Good Friday routine, elsewhere in the world ancient Christian practices marked the solemn day.

In Jerusalem, Christian pilgrims filled the cobblestone alleyways of the walled Old City to commemorate Jesus' crucifixion there two millennia ago. Thousands of international visitors and local Christians retraced Christ's last steps down the Via Dolorosa, Latin for the "Way of Suffering." The route ends at the ancient Church of the Holy Sepulcher, revered as the site of Jesus' crucifixion, burial and his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

"All my life I've been waiting for this wish — I've been wishing for one day to come here in Jerusalem to worship. I wanted to step where my lord stepped," said Roshan Futsom, a pilgrim from Toronto.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict lamented the widespread abandonment of faith in the West on Holy Thursday before he washed and dried the feet of 12 men to mark Christ's gesture of humility to his apostles on the night before he died.

The German-born pontiff said it sometimes seemed as if people in Western countries had grown bored of their own history and culture and the heartlands of Christianity were rejecting religion.

But he hailed strong examples of the faithful, such as his predecessor John Paul, whose beatification on May 1 is expected to attract hundreds of thousands to Rome and is seen by many in the Church as a chance to rejuvenate the institution.

"Have not we -- the people of God -- become to a large extent a people of unbelief and distance from God?" Pope Benedict said during a service in St. Peter's Basilica in which he blessed oils to be used in Catholic rites.

"Is it perhaps the case that the West, the heartlands of Christianity, are tired of their faith?"

He later poured water over the right feet of 12 men sitting on raised platforms and dried them. That ritual was held in the Basilica of St John's in Lateran, the Pope's cathedral in his capacity as bishop of Rome, while donations were collected for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Both services were to mark Christ's founding of the priesthood at the Last Supper on the night before he died.

Celebrating the sixth Easter season of his pontificate, the pope said the beatification of his Polish predecessor, John Paul II, would be a chance to remember a man of great faith.

"For all the shame we feel over our failings, we must not forget that today too there are radiant examples of faith, people who give hope to the world," Pope Benedict said.

The 84-year-old pope has often warned against creeping secularism which he has said is as bad as religious fanaticism.

One of the main themes of his papacy has been what the Church calls the "re-evangelization" of Europe, an attempt to urge people to return to their religious roots despite living in highly secularized societies.

BIG EVENT

The leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics has had a difficult struggle to rebuild the image of the Church after a scandal over the sexual abuse of children by priests reported in several countries.

Many in the Church establishment hope the beatification, bestowing on John Paul the title "blessed," will reinvigorate the institution and encourage people to return to the faith.

It is set to be the biggest event in Rome since the death of the charismatic and highly popular pope in 2005, when millions came to view his body or attend his funeral.

Vatican officials expect at least 300,000 people -- including tens of thousands from his native Poland -- to come

to the Italian capital for the three days of events celebrating his last step before sainthood.

On Good Friday, Pope Benedict will preside at services in the Vatican and then lead a traditional torch-lit Via Crucis, or Way of the Cross, around the ruins of Rome's ancient Colosseum.

Italian television will air a question and answer session with the pope on Friday, in which he will respond to queries sent in from people all over the world.

A Vatican newspaper published one of his answers on Thursday, in which he tells a mother who's son has been in a vegetative state for several years that his soul is still in his body and he can still feel the presence of love.

Holy Week services at the Vatican culminate on Easter Sunday, the most important day in the liturgical calendar, when the pope delivers his twice-yearly "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) blessing and message.

Code Words, Cover-Up: Gallup Clergy Sex Abuse File Now Online

It's all about code words, according to Patrick J. Wall. Wall, a canon lawyer and former Catholic priest and Benedictine monk, was in Winslow on Wednesday talking about the diocese of Gallup's recently released personnel file on the late Clement A. Hageman, whom diocesan officials have admitted was a pedophile priest.

The 156-pages of documents, while filled with references to the priest's chronic alcoholism, are also filled with church code words for sexual abuse, Wall said. Some of those references aren’t even subtle - "guilty of playing with boys" and the Latin phrase "cum pueris," which means "with boys" – while others are more euphemistic - ''the other trouble," "old transgressions,” and "his difficulty."

"There's enough in this file you could write a whole story alone on code words,"
Wall said.

Turns out the old saying is true - the devil really is in the details.

Decades-old evidence of a pedophile priest whose crimes were covered up by church leaders came to light yesterday in the form of long-buried memos from the Diocese of Brooklyn.

Two names figure prominently on the haunting pages from the past.

The first is Romano J. Ferraro, a former priest who is serving a life sentence in Massachusetts for raping a child there, and who had a well-documented penchant for abusing children in New York.

The second is Anthony Bevilacqua, who, as an auxiliary bishop in Brooklyn in the late 1970s and early 1980s, knew all too well about Ferraro's fondness for preying on children, and dealt with it, according to the memos, by simply having Ferraro transferred to a church in St. Louis, where he alledgedly abused three boys.

When Ferraro later tried to return to Brooklyn, Bevilacqua ordered his underlings to tell the serial sexual predator "to seek an assignment outside the diocese," according to one memo.

In another, Bevilacqua wrote that Ferraro refused to sign an agreement that called for him to be removed from the priesthood if he committed any more sexual misdeeds.
"It's a depressing scene all around," said Terence McKiernan, president of www.BishopAccountability.org, which features a detailed account of Ferraro's life as a pedophile priest.

"Ferraro abused children wherever he went," McKiernan said. "Some of that abuse wouldn't have happened if Bevilacqua had blown the whistle and called the cops when he had a chance."

The memos echoed what a Philadelphia grand jury asserted earlier this month - that Bevilacqua, a cardinal and retired archbishop of Philadelphia, was well-versed in the art of preventing abusive priests from facing justice.

"He was more savvy than most," said David Clohessy, executive director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP). "If this is what they wrote down and saved, can you imagine what they considered too radioactive to write down, or what was shredded?"

SNAP released the documents yesterday and called for grand juries to form in Brooklyn and Pittsburgh, where Bevilacqua reportedly covered for another abusive priest.

The memos were obtained in 2009 by Miami attorneys Adam Horowitz and Jessica Arbour, who represented a man who sued Ferraro in 2006. The man claimed that the priest sexually assaulted him in the late 1960s when Ferraro worked as a chaplain on a Navy Base in Key West.

Ferraro was dishonorably discharged by the Navy in 1971 after allegations of abuse came to light, according to BishopAccountability. org.

Two years later, he began working at a parish in Brooklyn.

He landed in trouble almost immediately. In a July 1, 1973 letter written by Ferraro to Francis Mugavero, the then-bishop of Brooklyn, he mentioned seeing a psychologist and causing the bishop "anxiety" and "possible embarrassment to the diocese and the church."

In that same letter, Ferraro said that Bevilacqua, then a priest, had urged him to get help.

Four years later, a copy of a letter detailing Ferraro's attempts to get two young boys to talk about masturbation following a Mass that was held in one of the boy's homes was supposed to have been sent to Bevilacqua.

All told, Ferraro was reportedly accused of molesting at least four boys at various parishes in New York in the 1970s.

In two memos from December 1980, Bevilacqua wrote that Ferraro had promised to sign a statement "that he would be laicized if he ever was involved in another homosexual incident."

"He felt that he would not like to sign it because it was acting under threat," Bevilacqua wrote.

A few weeks later, Bevilacqua wrote another memo. He had arranged a new home for Ferraro: the archdiocese of St. Louis.

And the horror story continued.

The U.S. Supreme Court denied the petition. With Thursday’s ruling, the case now moves to an unprecedented level requiring the Holy See to produce documents and answer plaintiff’s questions.

PORTLAND, Ore. (CN) - In a rare legal feat, a man who claims to have been sexually abused by a Catholic priest in the 1960s can conduct discovery on the Vatican, a federal judge ruled.

The order compelling the Vatican to produce documents in the 11-year old lawsuit marks an unheard-of step in sex-abuses cases against the Catholic Church. While archdioceses in the United States have been found liable in similar cases, this case boldly seeks to take the matter all the way to Rome, holding the governmental body of the denomination accountable, and not just the North American arm of the vast organization.

The plaintiff, who sued anonymously as John Doe, seeks to hold the church accountable through the Holy See for the abuse he says he suffered at the hands of the Rev. Andrew Ronan who died in 1992.

PORTLAND, Ore. A federal judge in Oregon ruled Thursday that the Vatican must respond to certain requests for information from a man who says he was molested by a priest in the 1960s.

The man known in court documents as John V. Doe filed suit eight years ago. He seeks to hold the Vatican liable for the abuse he said he suffered from the Rev. Andrew Ronan, who died in 1992.

U.S. District Judge Michael Mosman ruled that Doe is entitled to limited discovery related to whether the priest was an employee of the Vatican.

The Vatican has denied that it was Ronan's employer, citing the facts it found in files from other related Catholic organizations in the case.


Mosman ruled that Ronan may have been under the control of a U.S. Catholic organization, but said in the order that such a system doesn't preclude Ronan from also being an employee of the Vatican.

Doe's attorney, Jeff Anderson, of St. Paul, Minn., said the order goes further than any previous case by forcing the Vatican to turn over documentation. "It's the first time anyone's laid a glove on them to the extent they had to turn documents over," Anderson said.

In his ruling, Mosman cited "significant factual disputes" as to whether the Holy See had the right to control and fire Ronan, and ruled that Doe is entitled to some limited discovery.

The Vatican will be required to answer written questions within 60 days related to its process of defrocking, its policies regarding sexual abuse and its regulation of priests' conduct, among other requests made by Doe, but Mosman limited all of the discovery to files involving Ronan.

Mosman also granted Doe's request that the Vatican produce documents related to its practices and policies regarding sexual abuse and punishment, removal, relocation and treatment of priests, but again limited them to Ronan's specific case.

Jeffery Lena, an attorney for the Vatican, said the implications of the decision are still unknown.

"As a factual matter, Ronan was not a Holy See employee, and the Holy See was not aware of Ronan's misconduct until after Ronan had abused the plaintiff," Lena said in a statement released to The Associated Press on Thursday night.

He declined to comment further.

The Vatican has argued it wasn't responsible for Ronan or his multiple transfers. Amid allegations of sexual abuse, court documents say, Ronan was transferred from Ireland to Chicago and then to Portland, where Doe said the abuse occurred.

In papers filed last summer, Vatican lawyers said hundreds of documents from Catholic officials showed that U.S. officials of the priest's order "knew of Ronan's propensities and transferred Ronan," but the Holy See "had no prior knowledge regarding Ronan" and no role in moving him.

A federal judge in Oregon has ordered the Vatican to produce documents involving a now-dead priest accused of sexually assaulting a boy in the 1960s, a first-of-its kind ruling that could set a precedent for a similar case in Milwaukee.

U.S. District Judge Michael W. Mosman, who issued the narrow decision, said the documents were needed to determine whether Father Andrew Ronan was an employee of the Vatican at the time of the abuse - a key question in deciding whether the court has jurisdiction to hear the case on its merits.

"The Plaintiff has proffered evidence that tends to show the Holy See knew of Ronan's propensities and that, in some cases . . . exercised direct control over . . . priests accused of similar sexual misconduct," Mosman said.

Lawyers for the Oregon victim, identified in court records as John V. Doe, called Thursday's ruling groundbreaking and said it addresses the same issues raised in the Milwaukee case involving the late Father Lawrence Murphy, a serial pedophile believed to have molested hundreds of deaf boys over decades.

"It's huge. That's the very claim we're making in Milwaukee, and it's a door that's never been opened before," said St. Paul, Minn., attorney Jeffrey Anderson.

Whether Mosman can compel the Vatican to produce the records was not clear Monday.

"The relationship between sovereign nations is so much more political than legal," said Lisa Laplante, a visiting professor who teaches international law at Marquette University Law School. "Is the U.S. going to go after the Holy See for not handing over discovery documents? I kind of doubt it.

"It's not like in the U.S., where the government can compel cooperation," she said.

Vatican attorney Jeffrey Lena did not immediately return telephone calls and emails seeking comment. He told The Associated Press that the implications of the decision are not yet known.

"As a factual matter, Ronan was not a Holy See employee, and the Holy See was not aware of Ronan's misconduct until after Ronan had abused the plaintiff," Lena said in a statement.

Mosman gave the Vatican 60 days to answer a series of questions and produce all documents related to Ronan, as well as general documents detailing its policies on such matters as the removal, relocation and treatment of priests.

Mosman rejected the requests for a number of other documents, including those involving priests not named in the case.

"Some of these broad requests appear to be based on little more than a hunch that might yield valuable or embarrassing information about the Holy See and other instances of sexual abuse," he said.

The Vatican maintains that it is protected from prosecution by sovereign immunity. However, U.S. law limits that protection in cases where a foreign entity has a commercial interest or has engaged in a wrongful act.

Mosman said the Holy See has refused to say whether it knew of Ronan's abuse or played a role in his training, education, transfers or removal. It has pointed instead to documents provided by Ronan's order showing that it was his employer. But Mosman ruled that one did not preclude the other - a finding that could be relevant in the Milwaukee case where the Archdiocese of Milwaukee had employed Murphy.

Pope Benedict has named Philadelphia's Cardinal Justin Rigali as a special envoy to a church celebration in the Czech Repubilc in June. Members of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests are crying foul.

Rigali will head to the Czech Republic June 18 for the bicentennial celebration of the birth of St. John Nepomuceno Neumann.

SNAP likens the decision to rubbing salt in wounds. "Vatican officials are either incredibly stupid - and no one believes that – or incredibly callous," reads a statement from SNAP.

The advocacy group says the Pope should have chosen a different cardinal to represent the church, given the current charges against Rigali and says the decision to send him emphasizes the gap between what the Catholic Church says and does regarding child sex abuse cover-ups.

This pontifical act by the pope makes it clear that the better you are at keeping their predator priests moved around and/or kept in parishes and have access to children, the more you cover up their horrible sex crimes against kids, the more you ignore the laws of the land, and the more you are able to continue to get away with it, AND especially if you are able to keep doing this without getting yourself in jail..
YOU get promoted, honored, and given to luxurious life styles, by the POPE..

Can anybody understand HOW this is allowed to continue to happen? Can anyone see what the heck is wrong with this picture? Can anyone see that it is time to change the archaic statute of limitations for sex crimes, so that these enablers can be put behind bars? THEN and only THEN will the pope not be able to continue to give these church officials honors... Even the pope would have a hard time getting him out of jail.

Let's honor and/or recognize the leader of one of the largest Catholic archdioceses in the United States whose leadership has been the target of three Grand Jury Investigations by the District Attorney of the City of Philadelphia. Hollywood could never write this script; only Satan can be responsible for such evil, hypocrisy, hubris and deceit.

And, even as we struggle with this insult to the victims of clergy sexual abuse and their families, the Philadelphia Catholic faithful are greeted with yet another arrest of an employee in the Archdiocesan high school system. This coach/athletic director at Archbishop Carroll H.S. in Radnor, PA has been charged by the Montgomery County D.A.’s office with Unlawful Contact or Communication with a Minor, Promoting Prostitution, Corruption of Minors, Attempted Corruption of Minors, and related offenses.

According to Montgomery County D.A. Risa Vetri Ferman, “The coach suggested he could be this boy’s ‘sugar daddy.’”

With such immediate concerns re the safety and protection of the children in our archdiocese, one would think that Cardinal Rigali should remain here, meet with the faithful, and tell parishioners specifically what is being done to protect our young Catholics. We all know that such an action will not happen; what will happen is that Cardinal Rigali will travel as a special envoy to the Czech Republic this June. At the Czech church celebration, Cardinal Rigali will regale all in his regalia !

I understand that the pope would consider it logical to send the current archbishop cardinal of Philadelphia to the celebration of the first bishop of the archdiocese. But the move comes across as completely tone-deaf and disrespectful in an atmosphere where that very archdiocese is under fire for a tradition of abuse by the ordained and hierarchy against vulnerable children and their faithful families.

John Neumann had ties to Baltimore, New York and Pittsburgh during his ministry in the USA as well as to Philadelphia. Maybe the pope could have sent someone from those areas rather than Rigali who is in the legal and media hot seat.

On the other hand, from what I have seen of at least 20 years of unfolding scandals for the Roman Catholic Church, the only likely difference between sending Rigali from Philly or Zubik from Pittsburgh is whether or not a Grand Jury has been empaneled yet.

Sending Rigali under current circumstances, would certainly besmirch the reputation of the very man the Czechs are trying to celebrate. Is that any way to honor a saint? By sending a representative who is using every imaginable legal and psych-ops tactic to systematically hide, transfer and cover up for rapists of children?

The appointment of this "Cardinal" Rigali as a special envoy only brings up more of the same old horrors that the catholic (?) church and its band of disconnected protected old men continue to display to the world. This pope is so insulated from the world as it really is that it is pathetic. As a victim of these "men of God" I am shocked, saddened and of course not surprised. They will never learn. Why should they have to change when they have the third world countries to believe in them.

Then, a little later on, he romoves three more. Still no names.

When the US bishops meet in June, they will discuss “whether there was some sort of the breakdown of the system” in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, according to Bishop Blase Cupich of Spokane, chairman of the bishops’ Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People.

Cardinal Justin Rigali has placed 26 priests on leave following the release of a February grand jury report that found that dozens of priests credibly accused of the abuse of minors remained in ministry.

Most Holy Father:

"Here stand I. I can do no other. So help me God!"

These courageous words proclaimed at the Diet of Worms in 1521 are attributed to Martin Luther when he was directed by this church's legislative body to deny or defend his teachings or suffer the consequences of excommunication as a heretic from the Roman Catholic Church.

I, too, must take Martin Luther's stance and challenge your inexplicable actions in seeking to have Pope John Paul II canonized as one of the church's saints.

John Paul's dastardly behavior, in not addressing the clergy sexual abuse issue confronting his church while he was the leader of the world's Catholics, disqualifies him from this exalted position.

Herefore, it is blasphemy to the Nth degree on your part as the current leader of Catholicism to propose canonization for this unworthy pope.

Saints do not shirk their responsibility in doing what is right no matter the consequences.

John Paul FAILED MISERABLY in performing up to the level of a saint by protecting sexual predators while ignoring the needs of victims of the heinous crimes committed by priests.

A saint should have courage to say: "We, the popes, cardinals, bishops, and priests of the Roman Catholic Church have been grievously and sinfully wrong since the very beginning of the church's history in protecting predator priests at the expense of the victims of clergy sexual abuse.

"Humbly, in the sight of God, we openly admit our culpability and, in professing our shame, ask for forgiveness from our Creator and all humanity for the unspeakable sins we have committed throughout our history as a church against victimized children and their families."

John Paul FAILED MISERABLY for not cleansing his church from its centuries of sin committed against humankind!

As a survivor of four years of clergy sexual abuse in the early 1960s and author of a book, not yet published, entitled, "Wear a Collar, Rape a Child: Surviving Centuries of Sin Committed by Mother Church Demanding There Be No Sainthood for Pope John Paul II," I conclude that Pope John Paul had at least three opportunities during his tenure to do what was ethically, morally, and pastorally right in addressing the clergy sexual abuse crisis confronting the Roman Catholic Church.

The first opportunity for John Paul to cleanse his church presented itself in America in the mid 1980s with the revelation of a clergy sexual abuse crisis in Louisiana. There is no doubt in my mind that John Paul should have seized this opportunity to speak to the world's Catholics and tell them that the Vatican would be forever proactive in ridding the church of pedophiliac (victims normally under the age of 12) and ephebophiliac (victims normally between the ages of 12 and 17) priests through laicization, and that the children are indeed precious in the sight of Jesus.

John Paul was SHAMEFULLY silent! He FAILED MISERABLY in not seizing the day for justice for victims of clergy sexual abuse and for Catholicism itself!

A second opportunity presented itself in the 1990s highlighted primarily by the Massachusetts clergy sexual abuse scandal of deceit and cover-up under the unconscionable leadership of Cardinal Law of the Archdiocese of Boston.

Instead of taking the ethical, moral and pastoral high ground in exercising the Vatican's God-given responsibility to protect the church's children from being sodomized by priests, John Paul was despicable in his actions by condoning the criminal acts that were committed by Cardinal Law of which I am sure the pope knew had been ongoing for at least a decade.

He unthinkably continued to put the needs of Cardinal Law, the church's bishops, and even sexually abusive priests, above those of victims of clergy sexual abuse.

John Paul stayed SHAMEFULLY silent! He FAILED MISERABLY in not seizing the day for justice for victims of clergy sexual abuse and for Catholicism itself!

Armed with a third opportunity in 2002 to heal his church, John Paul instead refused to admit that the magnitude of the clergy sexual abuse dilemma confronting Catholicism was invoking a worldwide crisis, and it was not just an American phenomenon.

Thousands of reports of clergy sexual abuse and billions of dollars in settlements had been made, and John Paul still failed to lead his church out of chaos.

John Paul remained SHAMEFULLY silent! He FAILED MISERABLY in not seizing the day for justice for victims of clergy sexual abuse and for Catholicism itself!

In 1993, I reported the priest who sexually abused me to the Diocese of Birmingham, the Ad Hoc Committee on Sexual Abuse of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, several American bishops, America's cardinals, and to Pope John Paul II himself.

During a 2-year battle in attempting to have this ephebophile removed from the priesthood, I was ignored by the leaders of my church, and this priest remained in ministry at the Chancery in Birmingham.

Then, in 2002, only after I challenged this abusive priest's ministry once again and, after my story was printed in The Decatur Daily (Alabama) and several other victims of this priest came forward as a result of my revelation, he was finally forced into retirement in June 2002.

This wayward priest died in 2010.

I urge you to reconsider your proposal in having Pope John Paul II canonized as one of the church's saints. You are doing an unspeakable disservice to Catholicism in proposing John Paul receive status as a saint.

Will you have the ethical, moral, and pastoral courage to do what is right? I pray that you will.

This week, Catholics United released some shocking information about the finances of the Catholic League (CL) and its president, Bill Donohue. Although the numbers speak for themselves, some may wonder why it’s important. Here’s the information that we released to the media:

$399,196 – Bill Donohue's total salary and benefits package in 2009.
$26,200,000 – The Catholic League's total cash and assets.
$943,516 – The amount of money the CL pocketed after expenses in 2009.
$1,350,000 - The amount of money the CL pocketed after expenses in 2008.
$203,727 – CL vice president Bernadette Brady's total salary and benefits package.
$335,914 – The annual rent on the CL’s Manhattan high-rise office.
$57,826 – The CL’s office supply expenses in 2009.

For anyone familiar with the non-profit sector, these numbers are astonishing. The Catholic League's "non-profit" work involves little more than sending out inflammatory press releases and conducting PR stunts in the name of defending Catholicism. And this is ironic because Bill Donohue's work "defending Catholicism" and his frequent appearances in the media make little mention of core principles of Catholic social teaching, such as solidarity and the preferential option for the poor.

Bill Donohue has literally gotten rich by cashing in on neglecting the poor.

One of the defining virtues of the Catholic faith is its strong emphasis on direct service. Catholics run food pantries, homeless shelters, medical clinics and orphanages across the country. We do so because we take Jesus Christ’s teaching to love our neighbor seriously. Because of this mission-focused work, Catholics know the value of a dollar and how to stretch it so that it has the biggest effect. And that’s why the finances of the Catholic League are so shocking. These numbers reveal that Donohue is a rich New Yorker who is out of touch with the reality of millions of his fellow Catholics who work and live with poverty.

Donohue doesn’t talk about the need for comprehensive immigration reform or the effects of poverty on families because it doesn’t make for good TV - and that's bad for business. This helps to illustrate why there is a crisis in American Catholicism. Young Catholics are abandoning their faith in droves because they are tired of people like Bill Donohue and his fabricated culture war. Young Catholics don’t want a faith defined by Bill Donohue’s divisive politics. Young Catholics want a faith that reminds us that life is about something greater than ourselves.

Once I was able to realize the motives of Bill Donohue and identiry a political pattern that started late in the 1990's - my choice to read his poitically motivated feedbacks was to re-confirm my every fear. Mr. Donohue was the man what he referred to as the "Anti-Catholic" Media that was chosen to speak for the church,,,, and then I realized,,,, Yes Only an anti-catholic Media would choose him to speak for the church. I firmly believe the actions of Bill Donohue, his defense and friendships with the many "Evangelical" politicians who have converted (Deal Hudson for just one) and the way our Church is being dragged into Political Issues in the name of Religion will be the death of our church. Standing arm in arm with any politician, a single spot on a political stage can sell us doen the river forever.

On several occasions, I notified the Catholic League of outright anti-Catholicism,,,starting with the Don Imus mimick of our Cardinal,,,, then the mimick of our church and its teachings - (All was OK if it ended with an attack against either Hillary Clinton or Nanc Pelosi.

MY greatest and continuing outrage and something that EXPOSED the Catholic League for exactly what it is was the Outright Public Support of Rick Santorum and President Bush had when they fund-raised, ensorsed, supported and came to Philadelphia during the 2004 Republican Primary to stump for the LOOSING in the Polls CHOICE Specter, over the then WINNING in the Polls LIFE Toomey. There was not so much as a peep regarding that action from any member of the Catholic League,,,, or for that matter any Politically connected Church Spokesperson,,,,,, and that "Code of Silence" has never been broken. His feedbacks are political in nature, and the poor sick sould has devended Dr.Laura AND mel Gibson (at least three times for Mel)-- This is the best the Church has??

Bill Donohue represents everything the church does not stand for,,,, he is arrogant,,, a name caller,,, literally stalks those he feels is unworthy of Communion, Threatens Muslims, calls Nuns "Lady and dame", refers to a pedophile as a homosezual,,,,call for boycotts in order to have Customers greeted in a manner proper to an Angry Bully,,, AND actuall SOLD MOTHER TERESA "T" Shirts for a Protest Rally attended by Evangelical Politicians whil CATHOLICS were with the Biship praying.

On several occasions I ask out loud for the leaders of other evangelical denominations t o speak agains those claiming to represent their denomination..... WHere is the leadership of our Church. Donohue has accepted himself as the spokesperson for the Church and the Pope,,,, and no one seems to have the courage to say it isn't so.

One of the sad truths that history teaches us is that hand in hand with a great evil comes the great spinmeister. Whether the Minister of Propaganda is drawn into the vortex of evil or is intrinsically evil himself can be debated like the chicken and the egg. The answer is irrelevant, but the fact that they feed the evil and are responsible for the perpetuation of evil will always be relevant.

The twentieth century has given us two extraordinary spinmeisters: Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda, and Squealer the Pig in George Orwell’s Classic book “Animal Farm.” The first part of the twenty-first century has given us, in my opinion, another: William Donohue, the president of the Catholic League.

Mr. Donohue recently published a brilliant PR piece in the form of a paid advertisement in the NY Times. This is right out of Goebbels’ playbook, “Goebbels’ Principles of Propaganda” Number 6: “To be perceived, propaganda must evoke the interest of an audience and must be transmitted through an attention-getting communications medium.” thus the paid advertisement in the NY Times. Subterfuge, distortions, omissions and denial were intricately woven to portray the church as the object victim in what is now considered the Global Clergy Abuse Scandal. Such a fine piece of work cannot and should not go unnoticed. Mr. Donohue is indeed a master manipulator of language.

Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda, knew the importance of a scapegoat. Hitler is reported to have said of Goebbels that his success was due to both his mastery of language and intellect. Mr. Donohue has both these qualities as does Squealer in Animal Farm. Goebbels chose for his scapegoat the Jews and subsequently through the force of language and sheer intellect, led an entire nation to believe that the source of their problems were the Jews. Although Donohue mentions the clergy abuse problem among Rabbis, he was careful not to go too far for fear of being branded anti-Semitic.

Goebblel’s eighteenth dictum in his principles of propaganda is as follows: “Propaganda must facilitate the displacement of aggression by specifying the targets for hatred.” The scapegoat selected by Donohue is none other than the pariah of the Catholic Church, Homosexuals! Notice how the clever Donohue never uses the words homosexual priests together in the entire length of his essay! (see dictum 18 above) Notice how deftly Donohue omits the preposterous presumption that there would ever be homosexual priests in an organization that considers homosexual acts to be depraved. (http://www.catholic.com/thisrock/2004/ 0407sbs.asp ) Blame without an in depth examination is the trademark of a great spin doctor. Throw it out, let it stick to the wall and then move on. Donohue defines the clergy abuse scandal as a homosexual problem. The beauty of ignoring the relevance of homosexual priests is that it avoids embarrassing questions such as: Why does a church so profoundly anti-gay ordain so many gay priests?, Why upon discovering the homosexual acts with minors, did it actively protect these priests and what do theses actions say about the sexuality of the hierarchy? Donohue believes he has found his true calling. He is single handedly shielding his church from the homosexual horde that seeks to undermine his church and those that promote them.

Consider the outlandish proposition that the victims are not children! In this case Mr. Donohue makes a blanket statement that would make both Goebbels and Squealer turn green with envy. “let’s get it straight—they weren’t children and they weren’t raped” This statement is made with authority. It is confusing and meant to confuse, which was the hallmark of Squealer. The spinmeister speaks as if he is the first and last word on what constitutes a child; speaking from authority is a benchmark of a great spin doctor. Without saying what they were, he implies that the abused weren’t children. Notice how the propaganda leaves out ages. The readers say to themselves well if they weren’t children, they must have been older. Does older mean its okay? Does it make a difference if a child was ten, thirteen or fifteen when they were assaulted by their priest? Though the former may be termed a child and the latter an adolescent among those who utilize psychobabble (Spinmeisters) to make the act more palatable to their audience, does the rape, sodomization or molestation make the crime any less heinous? A good propagandist knows it does and employs the tactic every chance they get.

Goebbels seventh law part d.: states that the propaganda must be boomerang proof. Donohue does a masterful job of omitting young girls from the equation by insisting the clergy abuse scandal is all about homosexuality. By minimizing the number and nature of crimes against female minors he makes his argument about homosexuals boomerang proof. Quoting numbers such as over 80% of the abuse cases were of a homosexual nature he sets the parameters of clergy abuse. Once this is ingrained in the readers head, they will completely ignore the fact that the Vatican itself states that worldwide 30% of the cases of sexual abuse by priests is of a heterosexual nature and 10% is other. Donohue skips by this so fast that one never has the time to ponder either what the 10% other is or the fact that thirty percent plus ten percent equals forty percent so it is mathematically impossible to have over 80% of the sexual abuse be of a homosexual nature. Like Squealer and Goebbels, he knows that if he is ever called on it in the future, he can say he included the numbers, but in true fashion, he expects no one to call him on his numbers and if somebody did, he would dismiss them with the wave of a hand.

Who could possibly deny the brilliance of framing his argument as a dalliance among priests? A mere touch, a palpable touch nevertheless. “Minimization of the act” is the operative mandate. The acts of raping, sodomizing and molesting minors are considered felony crimes in most countries, Donohue never goes there. He avoids the criminal aspect like the plague for it would not do well to have anyone associate the Catholic Church with criminal activity or see the words criminal priest in a sentence. Like Squealer, Donohue utilizes his command of language to justify the unjustifiable acts of priests who abused children and the hierarchy who covered up these acts. He has the traits of a lap dog and a pit bull: blind allegiance to his church and the tenacity to never let go. Bringing in teachers and other organizations says to the public: yes, we have a few problems, but there are other groups such as the schools, other religions, etc that have problems too. “Its not only our problem” is another minimization tactic that is hard to rebuff. To his credit, Donohue cleverly avoids the global scale of Roman Catholic Clergy Abuse because it serves no purpose to let people know that there are credibly abused priests in over thirty countries around the world. Schools aren’t global and don’t move priests, bishops and cardinals around the world at will so Donohue localizes the issue to minimize it.

One cannot overrate the need for minimization of clergy abuse. A church that professes to be the one true church, whose priests are chosen by God, whose pope is the spiritual descendant of Christ and whose stated mission is to speak for the poor and vulnerable simply cannot either be associated with or guilty of sexual abuse. Donohue knows this and it is in this framework he tirelessly expends his energy.

In the neighborhood where I grew up, we had an expression when someone was trying to con us. It was, “Stop pulling my chain!” In the spirit of that expression, I nominate William Donohue for the “Pull It Sir Award.” for his first rate propaganda. This BOOH is for you!
